Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs should be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle changes.
